Working and Jobs

Yesterday night at work, I was working late shift. So there was me, Guy and Timmy. We started talking about iq (yes random) which led to jobs, which in turn brought up the subject of how we view working i.e. Do we want to be a doctor just so we can potentially live a wealthy life? Or do we become a doctor because we genuinely want to help people?

We asians, well mostly asian parents la (and don't say you've never said this while you were younger, it's in our blood) always tell their kids to become doctors. For us, doctors are like the ultimate job, you get money, respect and an honest job. What more can you ask? The only thing lacking in that list is the urge inside to help people, right? I'm not saying all asians only want money and status hor...It's just the question of you actually wanting to be a doctor. It's totally fine if your true ambition is to become a doctor, that you actually enjoy it. But this doesn't apply to all people. Some of us would hate to become a doctor. But out of those 'some people'' some will still do medicine even if they hate it (and if we've got the brains of course :P)

So the question at the end is: Will you stand over a person with a knife in your hands, blood splattered across your shirt (you're in a surgery room, not in the act of murdering someone :P) and go: 'Omg, get me out of this place, I hate it I hate it....but I really don't mind the Mercedes in my triple storey/river-view house."

Or will you be flying to third-world countries as part of a charity organisation, helping kids who's severely infected by some disease. Doing it entirely free of charge, getting less pocket money than the average 10 yr old, but still go: "I love my job"?

And I shall end my long post

Yes, yes, I am reading through your blog. I have joined the list of stalkers desperate for Melanin (Melanie = Melanin, get it? Aren't I witty..) but I am so bloody bored and your blog is pretty interesting :D.
Yeah, my comment was supposed to be that I TOTALLY AGREE. See, it's pretty much exactly the same for Sri Lankans. All Sri Lankan parents (except for my dad - he doesn't really want me to be a doctor 'cause he agrees with me - might have something to do with the fact that my mum's a gp... hmm...) want their kids to be doctors.
See, if you're Sri Lankan and you're smart, you want to be a doctor. Sri Lankans don't think about it. It's the ultimate job. You get good marks, you do med. It's the way Sri Lankans do. AND IT'S SO BLOODY GAY. It really pisses me off. I know this kid (well, she's in second year uni in Melbourne Uni now) and she used to bully this other ex-Bulimic Sri Lankan kid (although, she is pretty annoying too.. but bullying someone cause they're bulimic? Come on.), she does medicine now. So does her older brother, who did the exact same thing. I don't know so much about other Asians, but Sri Lankans are SUCH CONFORMISTS I WANT TO GO AROUND AND KICK THEM ALL IN THE HEAD. I have not met a single young Sri Lankan person who got into medicine and didn't do medicine. I've heard of one, but I don't know him. What do you want to be Melanin? (Can I call you that from now on?)
*You know, I might write about the same topic on my blog. I can't find anything to write about specifically and I feel like writing something. Hehe.. the word verification says 'flusymb'. It sounds almost like 'flumsybum'. Hahaha.
